The city of San Miguel de Allende is in Mexico. It is very old: it was founded in 1542. At first the city was small, but later it became an important place on the road between Mexico City and the city of Zacatecas, where silver was mined.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Mexico started a war for independence from Spain. This war began not far from San Miguel. General Ignacio Allende was an important leader in this struggle. He was born in this city, and that is why the city was later named in his honor — San Miguel de Allende.

In the 20th century, the old center of the city was declared a national monument, because there are beautiful old buildings there. After the Second World War, the city became a popular place for tourists and artists. Many foreigners, especially from the USA, came here to study art. The Instituto Allende and a cultural center were opened here, where you can learn drawing, music and dance.
