Naoshima: An Island of Contemporary Art

Level:
Naoshima is a small Japanese island. It is located south of the city of Okayama, off the northern coast of Kagawa Prefecture. The island has an area of about eight square kilometres, and approximately 2,900 people live here. In the 20th century, metal production played an important role in life on Naoshima. Today the island is known above all for its museums, modern architecture and works of art. People come here who want to see art not only in galleries but also while walking around.
In the south of the island are several buildings designed by the architect Tadao Ando. Among them are the Chichu Art Museum and the Benesse House complex, where visitors can see works of art and stay overnight. Another museum designed by Ando opened on 31 May 2025. It displays contemporary art from Japan and other Asian countries. The museum has a café. From its terrace, visitors can see the sea, the neighbouring island of Teshima and ships passing by. So after visiting the exhibition, visitors can spend time outdoors and enjoy the view.
But Naoshima is interesting not only for its new museums. Old streets and houses have been preserved in the Honmura area. Some former homes have now become cafés and restaurants. A walk through this area offers a glimpse of another side of island life. An unusual puppetry tradition is also preserved here: only women take part in the performances. This art form appeared on the island in the 19th century.
Architecture can also be found outside the museums. Among the island’s interesting buildings are an elementary school built in 1970, a ferry terminal and a community hall. Next to the hall is a garden. Cherry blossoms bloom there in spring, and the leaves change colour in autumn. Thus, a trip around Naoshima combines an introduction to art, walks along old streets and time spent in nature.

Questions
