The Paimio Sanatorium is located in a pine forest in southwestern Finland. The building was constructed in 1933 according to the design of architects Alvar and Aino Aalto. Initially, it treated patients with tuberculosis, later it became a regular hospital, but in 2015 it was closed.

Now the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation wants to give the building a new life. The Norwegian firm Snøhetta and Finnish architects have developed a plan. Former wards will become a high-level hotel. The surrounding area will have spaces for recreation, meetings, and cultural events.
Архитекторы работают очень бережно. Они хотят сохранить дух Аалто. В хирургическом крыле будет выставочный зал и большой зал на 700 человек. В главном крыле с балконами номера отремонтируют. Десять комнат приведут к виду 1933 года с особой мебелью и раковинами Аалто. Другие комнаты могут объединить или установить современные деревянные блоки для ванной. Стеклянные стены, добавленные позже, уберут, чтобы открыть балконы.
The architects are working very carefully. They want to preserve the spirit of Aalto. In the surgical wing, there will be an exhibition hall and a large hall for 700 people. In the main wing with balconies, the rooms will be renovated. Ten rooms will be restored to their 1933 appearance with special furniture and Aalto sinks. Other rooms can be combined or fitted with modern wooden bathroom blocks. Glass walls added later will be removed to open up the balconies.

Below, a spa area will be built with saunas and a jacuzzi, from which one can go out into the forest. The director of the Alvar Aalto Foundation says that changes are necessary because the building no longer serves its old function. He is confident that Aalto would have approved of the new project.

The sanatorium awaits a UNESCO decision in July. If it is included in the World Heritage list, it will help the development of the region. The project should show that historical buildings can live a new life.
