Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born in Moscow in 1821 into the family of a nobleman who was a doctor at a hospital for the poor. At first he studied at a private boarding school, then graduated from the Main Military Engineering School in Saint Petersburg. However, military service did not appeal to him, so in 1844 he resigned. Giving up his rights to the estates purchased by his father, Dostoevsky decided to devote himself to literature and live on his literary earnings. This choice was a conscious rejection of his previous path and determined the subsequent direction of his life, occupations, and creative work.
In 1846 Dostoevsky's first novel, "Poor Folk", appeared, written in the form of letters between the characters. The book received enthusiastic approval from readers, among whom were N. A. Nekrasov and V. G. Belinsky. The main character, Makar Devushkin, a poor minor civil servant, became one of the first examples of the "little man" in the writer's work. Dostoevsky was especially interested in the inner life of poor people, the reasons for their submissiveness, and their hidden feelings. This theme continued in works of the 1840s connected with the lives of poor Saint Petersburg officials and their complex inner world.
In the early works, Saint Petersburg itself also becomes an important character. For Dostoevsky, it is a mysterious city that seems to change and deceive the people living in it. Later, this kind of portrayal came to be called Dostoevsky's Petersburg. At the same time, the writer studied human psychology ever more deeply. In the novellas "The Double", "The Landlady", "White Nights", and "Netochka Nezvanova", and in the story "Mr. Prokharchin", he continued to depict poor people. He was interested not only in the external circumstances of their lives, but also in people's hidden feelings, inner conflicts, habitual submissiveness, and moral difficulties.
In the late 1840s, Dostoevsky became close to the circle of M. V. Petrashevsky, where political, economic, and philosophical problems of utopian socialism were discussed. At one of the meetings, a letter by V. G. Belinsky to N. V. Gogol, which was banned in Russia, was read. Soon the members of the circle were arrested and sentenced to death. When they were already on the scaffold, they were informed that they had been pardoned and that the death sentence had been replaced by four years of exile in Siberia. Dostoevsky was sentenced to hard labor and then to service as a private soldier. Thus, political discussions led to severe punishment for him.
In January 1850, Dostoevsky was taken to the Omsk prison, which he later called the "House of the Dead". He spent four years there, after which he was sent to Semipalatinsk as a soldier. During the period of imprisonment and hard labor, he wrote the novellas "The Village of Stepanchikovo and Its Inhabitants" and "Uncle's Dream". After the death of Nicholas I in 1855, his punishment was eased, and the writer was promoted to officer. In 1859 he resigned, moved to Tver, and later to Saint Petersburg. Thus ended the long period of his punishment and military service.
After hard labor, Dostoevsky's illness worsened, and until the end of his life he suffered from epileptic seizures. From 1861 to 1862, "Notes from the House of the Dead", a documentary work about his years of hard labor, was published. In 1861 the novel "Humiliated and Insulted" was published, continuing the exploration of the fate and psychology of the "little man". At the same time, the writer sought to explain his views on contemporary morality, literature, and politics. Together with his brother, he published the journal "Time", where he printed literary works and articles, and later continued this direction in the journal "Epoch".
In the articles and literary works of this period, Dostoevsky's sympathy for the suffering of the people acquired a religious and moral character. He believed that the Russian people had preserved the true Christ in their souls and should help bring peoples together and reconcile them. These views became known as pochvennichestvo and differed both from the ideas of the democratic intelligentsia and from Slavophile doctrine. In 1864 "Notes from Underground" was published, in which the protagonist has to choose between good and evil. In 1866 the novel "Crime and Punishment" appeared, devoted to the question of whether a person has the right to kill.
In 1867 Dostoevsky married the stenographer Anna Grigoryevna Snitkina, who became his close friend and assistant. In the final years of his life, he wrote the novels "The Idiot", "Demons", and "The Brothers Karamazov". In these books, the writer examined the danger of "enlightened egoism" and the situation in which a person believes that everything is permitted to him. Such a character faces the question of crime, that is, of violating morality, laws, God, and relationships with other people. Dostoevsky also considered similar moral problems in the journalistic articles of the book "A Writer's Diary", on which he worked until the end of his life.
Dostoevsky died in 1881 and was buried in Saint Petersburg at the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Later he became a classic of Russian literature and one of the most popular Russian writers in the West and Japan. His works entered the school curriculum and were adapted for the screen many times, while apartment museums were opened in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Staraya Russa. The titles of his novels and individual expressions entered the Russian language. Among them are "administrative enthusiasm" and the word "stushevatsya". Soviet literary criticism also used the disparaging term "Dostoevshchina", associated with religious and moral searching.
